When hurricanes happen, we always want to be prepared. This is why there are so many social media posts of helpful preparation advice for an upcoming hurricane and one that is highly uncommon is quickly going viral!
Sheila Pulanco Russell who is residing at Lumberton, North Carolina posted an ingenious tip on her Facebook account on how to avoid food contamination. She shared that for those who are evacuating from the coast, she heard a great tip that can be helpful to everybody:
The One Cup Tip!
She said that you can put a cup of water in your freezer then freeze it solid. Then put a quarter on top of it and leave it in your freezer. When you come back after the evacuation, you would be able to tell if your food went completely bad and just refroze, or if it stayed “frozen” while you were gone.
Once you see that the quarter has fallen to the bottom of the cup, this means that all the food defrosted and you should throw it out to avoid food poisoning. If the quarter stayed on the top, or the middle of the cup, then your food might still be okay to consume.
This idea is not only good for hurricane preparedness. You can also leave it in your freezer all the time if you lose power for any reason and this tip can help you determine the state of your food that is left in your refrigerator. This post gained over 134,000 reactions and shared over 265,000 times.
It also received almost 8,000 comments and many people are glad that they learned about this simple yet very effective tip especially during storms and hurricane incidents where they have to move out of the house temporarily, or when the power goes out.
Other people also shared their unique ideas to prepare for the hurricane. One comment says that you and your family can get matching outfits. This may not look cute but if you must evacuate, these matching outfits will make it easier for you all to stay together even amongst a crowd of people.
Choose bright colors like bright red or matching raincoats, or even neon green baseball caps. The brighter you are, it would be easier to locate you.
There are so many crazy ideas that we can think of to keep ourselves safe before, during, and after the hurricane hits. However, the most important thing is to always make sure that our safety is the number one priority. Do not wait to be reminded to evacuate again and again.
By then, it might be too late. If you think that you and your family are dangerous, one tip that everyone learned about hurricane Katrina is to evacuate immediately while you still can.
Remember that you will not be able to protect your home by staying and you are just setting yourself up to drown while trying to do something that is impossible. Sometimes people wait to act until the hurricane is on its way. Prepare ahead of time. Share your ideas with other people, no matter how unusual others would think of it.
The internet is the easiest way to influence others. You might be saving a life with your crazy idea.
